Former England cricketer Tony Pigott has passed away at 67. Pigott, known for taking over 1,000 wickets in his career, died on Sunday.
The ex-Sussex seam bowler suffered a heart attack after overcoming oesophageal cancer. Pigott was renowned for his achievements in the County Championship and his lone appearance for England, which became a memorable moment in cricket history.
In 1984, Pigott received a sudden call-up to play for England against New Zealand in Christchurch, despite having wedding plans during that time. Postponing his wedding, he flew to New Zealand and managed to secure two wickets.
However, Pigott’s debut match ended in disappointment as the hosts defeated England by an innings and 132 runs in three days at Lancaster Park. This marked the end of his international career.
On the county level, Pigott spent 18 years at Sussex before moving to Surrey in 1994 due to recurring injuries. He later returned to Sussex in 1997, eventually becoming the CEO after leading a successful takeover. Pigott played a pivotal role in laying the groundwork for Sussex’s County Championship victory in 2003 and spearheaded the installation of floodlights at Hove, a first in the UK.
Following Pigott’s passing, heartfelt tributes have poured in from former colleagues and players. Chris Adams, a former Sussex captain, expressed his deep sorrow and gratitude for Pigott’s influence on the club’s history and his personal life.
Adams highlighted Pigott’s positive impact on his own career and the club’s success, crediting him for his decision to join Sussex in 1998. Pigott, affectionately known as ‘Lester,’ was cherished for his optimistic and proactive character.
Others, like ex-Sussex wicket-keeper Ian Gould, also mourned Pigott’s loss, referring to him as one of cricket’s great personalities.
