“FIFA World Cup 2026 Faces Geopolitical Turmoil”

At the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace, Gianni Infantino, a member, sported a red cap with USA letters, reminiscent of the MAGA style, and chuckled. Shortly after, the USA, the primary host of FIFA’s World Cup, conducted an airstrike on one of the 48 participating nations.

This same Infantino recently presented a ‘FIFA Peace Prize’ to Donald Trump, a move that, if not alarming, would be seen as ironic. However, for FIFA and the associations gearing up for World Cup 2026, the situation is gravely serious. The lead-up to the previous World Cups in Qatar and Russia was politically charged, but the upcoming tournament is mired in unprecedented challenges.

The issues abound. Trump, who has pledged a prominent role in the World Cup, is entangled in a dispute with Canada over trade tariffs. FIFA has faced criticism for its ticket pricing strategies, and Guadalajara, one of the host cities, is grappling with severe narco-violence just months before kick-off.

Moreover, concerns were raised that the 11 US cities hosting matches might face dire consequences due to frozen funding amid a government shutdown. Complicating matters further, the United States launched airstrikes on Iran, a nation set to play three Group G matches on American soil.

FIFA appears hesitant to take a firm stance at present, yet Infantino’s clear alignment with Trump is evident. While maintaining a productive relationship with the hosting country’s president is advisable, excessive adulation may not be wise.

During the International Football Association Board meeting in Wales, FIFA’s secretary general, Mattias Grafstrom, mentioned they would closely monitor developments. He offered a general assurance that everyone involved in World Cup 2026 would be safe.

Nevertheless, the recent geopolitical shifts and ongoing troubles in Mexico prompt a reassessment by national associations. As Thomas Tuchel prepares to announce England’s squad for upcoming matches, he must address the implications of events in Iran and the Middle East for the World Cup.

Although the tournament’s occurrence does not seem under immediate threat, the situation demands serious consideration. Infantino’s overt support for Trump’s agenda complicates efforts to make the World Cup a success.
