A mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, aged 37, was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sparking controversy among local, state, and federal authorities. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson, Tricia McLaughlin, claimed the officer acted in self-defense, alleging that a “rioter” was trying to run over federal officers.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized the officer’s actions, citing video evidence showing ICE agents approaching a vehicle on the street before shots were fired as the car attempted to flee. The incident took place at East 34th Street and Portland Avenue during the local morning hours on Wednesday.

Protesters gathered at the shooting scene, expressing anger towards the presence of local and federal officers, including senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, known for leading crackdowns in Los Angeles, Chicago, and other cities. Chants of “Shame! Shame! Shame!” and “ICE out of Minnesota!” echoed as they stood behind police barriers.

Mayor Frey took to social media, condemning the chaos caused by federal immigration enforcement agents in the city and demanding ICE’s immediate departure. He vowed solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities and later urged ICE to leave Minneapolis during a press conference.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism,” attributing it to a confrontation where the ICE officers were reportedly attacked by the victim. However, Mayor Frey disputed the official account, asserting that the agent’s actions were unjustified and resulted in a tragic outcome.

The incident unfolded amid heightened tensions in Minneapolis and St. Paul following a DHS crackdown related to alleged fraud among Somali residents. The operation, involving over 2,000 ICE agents, is described as the agency’s largest immigration enforcement effort in Minnesota.

The shooting took place near historic immigrant markets and close to the location where the death of George Floyd occurred in 2020. Reverend Hierald Osorto of St. Paul’s-San Pablo Lutheran Church, serving a predominantly Latino congregation, highlighted the community’s struggles with fear and anxiety.

The Immigration Defense Network in Minnesota conducted a training session for individuals willing to monitor federal officers on the streets, drawing support from community members like Mary Moran, who felt compelled to take action.
