A collision between a speedboat carrying numerous tourists and a fishing trawler occurred near the Phi Phi Islands in southern Thailand. The incident involved the Korawich Marine 888 vessel, which was carrying 55 individuals. Tragically, an 18-year-old Russian tourist named Elizaveta S lost her life despite rescue efforts.
Reports indicate that at least twelve people sustained injuries during the collision. One individual was initially in critical condition and was taken to Phi Phi Hospital, while the rest received medical attention from paramedics before being transferred to hospitals in Phuket for further assessment.
The accident happened in the vicinity of Koh Gai Island, near the Phi Phi Islands, within the waters between Phuket and Krabi. The speedboat’s bow was severely damaged in the crash, causing the vessel to capsize and sink in the Andaman Sea. Fortunately, the fishing trawler, Pichai Samut 1, remained unscathed, with no oil spill or environmental harm reported.
The Russian Consulate General in Phuket confirmed the unfortunate passing of the young Russian woman and is working to gather information on the other victims. Authorities are conducting an investigation into the collision’s circumstances, focusing on factors such as speed, visibility, and navigation practices at the time.
While the nationalities of all passengers have not been officially disclosed, there were reports of Russian-speaking tourists among those aboard. The southern Andaman coast of Thailand is known for its bustling tourist boat activities, especially during the peak winter season, with numerous speedboats shuttling passengers between Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands.
