A bereaved family has expressed a sense of “some closure” while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding the circumstances that led to a heart pump malfunction resulting in a man’s tragic demise.
The official inquiry into the passing of Luke Barnes from Mapperley, Nottingham, concluded at Vantage House in Huntingdon under the direction of Coroner Elizabeth Gray. Luke, a father of three, had his life support terminated on March 17, 2023, while awaiting a heart transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. Luke had been under the hospital’s care since 2022 and was using a BiVad mechanical pump to aid his heart function due to cardiomyopathy diagnosed in 2018.
During the inquest’s commencement, it was revealed that an unforeseen disconnection in the BiVad pump caused a fatal hemorrhage leading to Luke’s death. Coroner Gray outlined a narrative conclusion stating that Luke succumbed to a catastrophic hemorrhage resulting from the disconnection, a rare and unpredictable event that remained unexplained.
The medical cause of Luke’s demise was attributed to multi-organ failure, severe hemorrhaging, and dilated cardiomyopathy due to the unexpected disconnection. Witnesses, including nurses Thomas and Kuzniarz, testified that they swiftly responded to the emergency, attempting to resuscitate Luke upon discovering the disconnection and significant blood loss.
On the inquest’s final day, Luke’s mother and brother paid tribute to him, expressing a mix of emotions and acknowledging the difficulty of the situation. Despite the lack of definitive answers, the family found solace in knowing that everything possible was done according to standard procedures.
The family’s barrister requested the coroner to consider issuing a Regulation 28 report to prevent similar incidents in the future. Coroner Gray confirmed that medical staff followed proper protocols and there were no equipment defects identified during the investigation. She will now prepare a report focused on preventing similar tragedies.
