The family of a hunger striker currently in jail is deeply concerned and has urgently appealed to the government for assistance. Kamran Ahmed, a 28-year-old from London, has been on a hunger strike for 44 days to protest in support of Palestine. He is accused of breaking into the UK premises of an Israel-based defense company in Bristol and has been held on remand in HMP Pentonville for seven months.

Despite being hospitalized due to deteriorating health during his hunger strike, Ahmed remains resolute in his cause, stating that sacrificing his life for it would be justified. He suffered severe chest pains, tremors, and slurred speech before being taken to the hospital for the second time. Legal action threats were sent to Justice Secretary David Lammy by Palestine Action, alleging government neglect of safety policies in prisons, which authorities deny.

In response to accusations of negligence, a Ministry of Justice spokesperson refuted the claims, emphasizing the importance of prisoner well-being and the avoidance of incentivizing hunger strikes. Kamran’s sister, Shahmina Alam, has directly appealed to Mr. Lammy, urging him to take action and emphasizing the need for transparency and integrity in the justice system.

Amid concerns about Kamran’s deteriorating health, his family anxiously awaits updates on his condition. His father, Ali, expressed distress over the lack of communication from the authorities, highlighting the uncertainty of receiving timely information. Shahmina voiced her worries about her brother’s worsening condition and the emotional toll on their family.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reassured that protocols are being followed in response to criticism for declining meetings with hunger strike representatives. Lord Timpson, the Prisons Minister, acknowledged the seriousness of hunger strikes in prisons but affirmed the existing safety measures in place. He emphasized that healthcare teams provide NHS care and closely monitor the situation to address any health concerns promptly.

The government stance remains firm on not intervening in ongoing legal cases, citing the importance of the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary. Despite pleas for engagement from the hunger strikers’ families, the government maintains its position on upholding legal procedures and ensuring the safety and well-being of prisoners.
