A specialist from British Gas has shared tips on how to address cold spots in your radiator, suggesting a 97p tool for the job. If your radiator has cold spots, especially at the top, or if it makes gurgling sounds and heats up slowly, it may need bleeding to release trapped air. Acquiring a radiator key, which can be purchased for as low as 97p from Screwfix, is essential for this task.
Before bleeding the radiator, it is crucial to turn off the heating system and ensure the radiator has completely cooled down to avoid the risk of burns from hot water. Using an old towel and container to catch the water, locate the small valve on the radiator and turn it anti-clockwise with the key.
The key is to open the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound, signifying trapped air escaping. Once water starts coming out, collect it in the container, then tighten the valve and repeat the process for other radiators. Overturning the valve can lead to reduced boiler pressure, so it’s important to be cautious.
If bleeding doesn’t solve the issue, it’s advisable to seek assistance from a gas safe registered engineer as there may be underlying complications. Additionally, a British Gas energy engineer suggests keeping the oven door open after cooking to utilize the remaining heat effectively.
Energy bills have recently increased, with the average household paying approximately £1,758 annually for gas and electricity if using direct debit. The price cap sets limits on unit rates and standing charges but not on the total energy bill, which still depends on consumption. Pre-payment meter users now face a yearly cap of £1,711, while those paying upon receipt of bill must budget for £1,894 annually.
