A professional in the field of mental health has provided valuable insights on how to support individuals facing challenges in anticipation of World Suicide Prevention Day.

Annually, on September 10, various organizations globally unite to promote awareness for World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, Samaritans, a charitable organization dedicated to preventing suicide, emphasizes the importance of taking action, intervening in negative thoughts, and demonstrating care towards individuals who may be at risk of suicide.

Statistics from the government reveal that in the UK or Ireland, a person dies by suicide every 90 minutes. Additionally, research indicates that one in four adults has contemplated suicide.

Joseph Conway, a registered psychotherapist and mental health trainer at Vita Health Group, highlights the persistent stigma associated with suicide, which may hinder individuals from seeking or providing support to those in distress.

Conway emphasizes the significance of reaching out and listening to individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, emphasizing that offering a listening ear could potentially save a life.

To assist someone expressing suicidal thoughts or showing signs of distress, Conway recommends six crucial steps. These include actively listening, avoiding judgment, echoing their concerns to ensure understanding, and providing reassurance of companionship to combat feelings of isolation.

In moments of crisis, simply being present can have a profound impact. Encouraging individuals to tackle challenges one step at a time and ensuring they seek professional help, through avenues like GPs, counselors, or organizations like Samaritans, is vital. Conway stresses that confidentiality should never override the urgency of addressing potential suicide risks.

In urgent situations, reaching out to emergency services or medical professionals is crucial to ensure immediate assistance for individuals in crisis. Samaritans’ helpline and resources are also available for emotional support and guidance.

By offering support, understanding, and guidance, individuals can play a pivotal role in preventing suicide and supporting those in need during challenging times.
