Energy companies like Octopus and OVO are providing complimentary electric blankets to households facing financial difficulties. These electric blankets contain insulated wires that heat up when connected to power, offering a cost-effective alternative to central heating.

Octopus customers in need may qualify for a free electric blanket through the Octo Assist program, a £40 million initiative aimed at assisting customers experiencing financial challenges. Eligibility typically requires struggling with energy bill payments or being classified as a vulnerable customer, such as the elderly, households with young children, or individuals with specific health conditions.

Aside from electric blankets, eligible individuals may also access grants to clear energy debts, flexible payment options, and payment holidays. Applications can be made online via the Octopus website.

In a similar vein, OVO Energy is extending support through its Extra Support Package, valued at £56 million. This assistance includes free energy-saving products like electric blankets and smart sockets, along with potential home upgrades such as loft insulation and new boilers for qualified households in need.

OVO offers payment plans and emergency credit to those struggling with bills. Online applications for assistance are available on the OVO website.

Recent increases in energy bills have been observed, with the Ofgem price cap climbing from £1,720 to £1,755 for typical dual fuel households paying by direct debit. This price cap remains effective until December 31, subject to further updates. Customers on standard variable rate tariffs fall under the Ofgem price cap regime, as long as they are not on fixed rate deals.

It is essential to note that while there is a price cap on unit charges for gas and electricity, the total energy bill remains dependent on actual usage. The Ofgem price cap also covers standing charges, fixed daily fees for energy network connections.

The price cap serves as an estimate of annual expenses for a household with average energy consumption levels. Ofgem’s calculations are based on an assumed usage of 2,700 kWh of electricity and 11,500 kWh of gas annually.
