A father under the influence of alcohol assaulted his partner on a flight in the presence of an off-duty police officer as they were returning from a family vacation, according to a court hearing.
Kevin Chapman, aged 36, consumed vodka during an overnight flight from Greece to Newcastle, leading to a confrontation with his girlfriend in front of their young daughter. Witnesses reported that Chapman suddenly attacked the victim, prompting cabin crew to intervene and relocate the woman to ensure her safety. Despite initial discussions about diverting the plane, it landed at Newcastle International Airport without further incident.
Chapman was apprehended upon arrival and later admitted to being drunk on the aircraft and committing assault during his court appearance. Subsequently, he received a suspended four-month prison sentence after being deemed guilty by the court.
During the flight, an off-duty police officer observed Chapman’s excessive drinking behavior and alerted the cabin crew due to the disturbance caused. Despite attempts to calm Chapman down, he proceeded to physically assault his partner before being separated from her. Following the incident, Chapman was arrested by the awaiting authorities at the airport.
In his defense, Chapman’s lawyer cited his client’s mental health issues and fear of flying as contributing factors to his actions. Despite the incident, Chapman’s partner remains supportive of him, and they are still in a relationship. In addition to the suspended sentence, Chapman was ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge.
