Dr. Clare Bailey, the wife of the well-loved TV physician, has expressed deep remorse a year following his tragic passing on a Greek island.
Michael Mosley disappeared in June of the previous year while out for a walk on the island of Symi. His body was eventually found near Agia Marina Beach after an intense search lasting four days.
An inquiry determined that he had passed away at the age of 67, possibly due to a heatstroke or an unknown medical condition.
In an emotional conversation, Dr. Bailey shared her sorrow over discarding one of his possessions. She confessed, “The one thing I really regret was his, was his… what are those shoes called? He wore leather shoes with a kind of high…” Hiking boots?
“Not exactly hiking boots, but he consistently wore the same boots for many years. I disposed of them because I felt focused on something else. And I now regret that,” Bailey disclosed to The Sunday Times.
She went on to describe the ongoing impact of her loss, admitting that even after a year, she struggles to accept the sudden loss of Michael, stating, “I don’t think one can make sense of it. The shock is so deep, I don’t know how to.”
She also recounted one of the most challenging and surreal experiences she faced after his death – the journey back home without him. “And there are moments of it that are horrific where you have to pick up your bags and board the plane. I was absolutely terrified of getting on the plane.”
In June, the family revisited Greece to commemorate the anniversary of Michael’s passing, opting not to stay on Symi Island due to the emotional strain of their previous search efforts.
Clare explained, “We all felt that was just going to be too much, because we had climbed and searched and scratched our way through so much of the strange parts of the island, so it was very, very fraught. But we did go back on the day, to the lovely, beautiful monastery at the far end of Symi. I’ve not grown up religious at all, but I find it comforting to sit on a pew.”
Despite the sorrow, Clare remains dedicated to upholding Michael’s legacy. She finds solace in completing the book she had begun writing before his passing, titled Eating Together.
Dr. Mosley is survived by Clare and their four children.
He was renowned for hosting popular BBC health programs such as Trust Me, I’m a Doctor and The Truth About Exercise, and was a proponent of intermittent fasting and low-carb diets, authoring books advocating the ketogenic diet.
