Hari Budha Magar, a hero of the Pride of Britain awards, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first double amputee to conquer the Seven Summits challenge, which involves reaching the highest peaks on each continent of the globe.
Having lost his legs in a tragic incident in Afghanistan in 2010, Hari overcame immense challenges to reach the summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica on January 7th. Using specially designed prosthetic legs suitable for snowy and icy conditions, he successfully climbed 4892m and planted a Mirror flag at the peak.
Reflecting on his achievement, Hari expressed overwhelming emotions, stating, “It’s just an amazing feeling. I don’t know how we did it – but the Seven Summits are complete.” Despite facing doubts and obstacles due to his disability, Hari persevered and completed the challenge, raising significant funds for charitable causes.
The Seven Summits challenge is renowned as one of the most prestigious mountaineering accomplishments globally. Hari’s journey included scaling various peaks, such as Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Denali, among others. Although he substituted one peak due to accessibility issues, his determination and resilience have been acknowledged by Guinness World Records.
Navigating treacherous terrains and enduring extreme conditions, Hari and his team undertook a demanding ascent to Mount Vinson’s summit. Despite facing physical challenges like blisters and freezing temperatures, the breathtaking views at the top made the arduous journey worthwhile.
Born in Nepal and later joining the Gurkhas, Hari’s life took a drastic turn when he suffered life-changing injuries in Afghanistan. Overcoming despair and finding solace in sports like climbing, Hari’s journey culminated in a historic achievement that inspired many.
