Starting today, a wider group of individuals, including Blue Badge holders, will now be eligible for the Disabled Persons Railcard. This expansion encompasses a more diverse range of both visible and non-visible disabilities.

The Disabled Persons Railcard provides a 1/3 discount on rail fares, resulting in an average annual saving of £126 for users. The cost of the railcard is £20 for one year or £54 for three years. Additional money-saving tips for transportation can be found here.

Furthermore, the discount extends to one companion aged 16 and above traveling with the cardholder. The eligibility criteria for the railcard now includes individuals who meet specific conditions.

The initial announcement to broaden the eligibility criteria for the Disabled Persons Railcard was made in November 2025, with further extensions planned for September 2026. The upcoming expansion later this year will encompass certain long-term medical conditions and forms of neurodiversity significantly affecting the ability to travel by train.

Detailed information regarding evidence requirements and application instructions will be released before September.

Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in rail travel, stating that the expansion of the Disabled Persons Railcard eligibility is a significant advancement towards enhancing accessibility and confidence in rail travel.

Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the milestone achieved with the expansion of the Disabled Persons Railcard to make everyday journeys more affordable and accessible for a larger portion of the population. The commitment to accessibility in railways is emphasized through the Accessible Railways Roadmap under Great British Railways initiative.
