A father from the UK shared how his life was severely impacted by a dental mishap, leading to ongoing pain and anxiety related to his mouth. Steven Rahman, residing in St Ives, Hampshire, recounted how his London dental clinic failed to detect painful cysts in his jaw for years, resulting in significant health issues. The excruciating pain caused by the cysts necessitated hospital surgery, triggering fears of jaw dislocation and tooth damage.

Even today, Steven struggles to eat normally, experiencing intermittent pain and discomfort, along with heightened anxiety about dental procedures. He expressed, “The swelling in my face was so severe that it hindered my social and professional interactions, forcing me to stay home. The cysts had eroded the roots of some teeth, leading to multiple root canals. Switching dental practices revealed the neglected cysts, prompting crucial medical intervention.”

Steven underwent complex surgical procedures, including the insertion of a drainage tube to manage one of the cysts, resulting in prolonged recovery and difficulty in eating solid foods. Lingering effects include partial loss of sensation in his jaw area, limited jaw mobility, and ear discomfort. Root canals were necessary to salvage damaged teeth, prolonging his painful journey.

Daily activities like eating, talking, and socializing have become arduous for Steven, who sought legal recourse through the Dental Law Partnership. The legal team highlighted the missed diagnosis of the cysts, underscoring the potential for early treatment. In an out-of-court settlement in April 2025, Steven was awarded £30,000, although the dentist disputed responsibility for the ordeal.

Reflecting on his ongoing struggles, Steven remarked, “I continue to endure sporadic jaw pain and face limitations in jaw movement, impacting my eating habits. The fear of dental issues persists, particularly concerning the previously treated teeth. Despite temporary relief, the anxiety about future dental problems and tooth loss lingers.”

Having relied on regular dental check-ups for over two decades, Steven expressed disappointment in the oversight of the cysts’ development over the years, emphasizing his trust in dental professionals.
