The Defence Secretary has pledged to put an end to the issue of substandard military housing following the completion of upgrades to 1,000 homes ahead of schedule.
John Healey has directed an additional 250 military residences to receive priority renovations in the upcoming months, marking a 25% increase from the initial target set eight months ago. The housing improvement initiative has already enhanced nearly 700 properties in England, over 150 in Northern Ireland, more than 100 in Wales, and upwards of 50 in Scotland.
During an interview with The Mirror at a Colchester barracks, Mr. Healey emphasized the positive impact of the improvements on morale and retention within the military, expressing determination to eradicate the longstanding problem of inadequate military housing.
Mr. Healey remarked, “One of the most significant scandals in recent years has been the deplorable condition of the homes provided for our service members and their families. Within six months of taking office, we reclaimed 36,000 military family residences, ending a detrimental privatization scheme. We have now embarked on a £9 billion investment plan over the next decade to upgrade or rebuild the majority of Forces family homes.”
He further stated, “We have successfully met our target to revamp a thousand of the most dilapidated homes ahead of schedule, ensuring that this Christmas, more families are residing in homes suitable for Heroes. These upgraded homes are of a standard that anyone would be proud to live in, and I am pleased that we are rectifying this situation at last.”
Properties nationwide have undergone comprehensive refurbishments, including new flooring, replacement of outdated boilers and heating systems, roof repairs, as well as installation of modern bathrooms, kitchens, windows, and doors.
Mr. Healey highlighted that these actions not only boost morale but also contribute to retaining personnel in the military. He mentioned, “The quality of housing and the living conditions for families have a direct impact on morale and retention rates within the forces, and I anticipate a positive effect on both aspects.”
Cpl Jack Crean, along with his partner Nina and their one-year-old son Charlie, recently moved into one of the newly renovated homes at Bassingbourn Barracks in Cambridgeshire. Cpl Crean expressed delight at being in their updated home for the holidays, noting the improved living conditions and the positive impact on his family’s well-being.
