Jodie Ounsley, known as Fury on the television show Gladiators, has likened the new season of the popular program, hosted by Bradley Walsh and his son Barney, to a fierce battle. With a background in professional rugby, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and being a five-time World Coal Carrying champion, Jodie thrives on competition and pressure.
Joining the show’s lineup in 2024 after an eight-year break, Jodie was selected for her strength and competitive spirit. Despite facing challenges in her life, including being born profoundly deaf and undergoing cochlear implant surgery at a young age, Jodie views her disability as a unique strength and takes pride in being a role model for children.
Reflecting on her impact as a Gladiator, Jodie emphasizes the importance of normalizing disabilities and inspiring others to stand up for themselves. Her late father, Phil, who appeared on Gladiators in 2008, remains a source of inspiration for Jodie, and she strives to live by his adventurous spirit.
Despite facing personal tragedy with her father’s passing, Jodie remained committed to her obligations, including rehearsing for the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special. Encouraged by her dance partner Neil Jones, who also experienced loss, Jodie found strength in honoring her father’s memory through her performances.
Embracing her father’s motto of seizing life’s opportunities, Jodie is determined to undertake new challenges, including hiking up a mountain in April to honor her father’s memory. By following her father’s example, Jodie hopes to stay connected to him and find solace in positive experiences.
Looking ahead, Jodie contemplates the possibility of participating as a full-time contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, fueled by the encouragement of the show’s professionals. Embracing a newfound confidence, Jodie remains open to future opportunities that may come her way.
Catch the return of Gladiators on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday, January 17th at 5.45pm.
