Passengers who were aboard a train involved in a tragic crash in Spain recounted the terrifying moments when rescuers used axes to break windows and aid them in escaping the wreckage. The incident occurred when a high-speed train en route to Madrid derailed, collided with another train, resulting in the death of at least 39 individuals and injuries to around 170 others in Adamuz.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and destruction, with images showing severely damaged train carriages and rescue teams working diligently to assist the injured. Salvador Jiménez, a journalist on one of the trains, likened the impact to an earthquake and shared how emergency personnel swiftly used axes to open windows for passengers to evacuate.

The first train, operated by Iryo, carried approximately 300 passengers, while the second train, operated by Renfe, had around 200 individuals on board. Survivors recalled moments of panic and confusion as they were thrown from their seats and enveloped in darkness amidst the calamity.

The aftermath of the crash left many passengers with harrowing experiences as they recounted being flung around and witnessing the destruction of the trains. Despite the tragedy, stories of luck and survival emerged, such as a woman who narrowly avoided a catastrophic fate by changing carriages at the last minute to be with a friend, while another friend sustained severe injuries.

This tragic incident has been labeled as the deadliest rail crash in Spain in over ten years, with authorities confirming the loss of 39 lives and numerous individuals being hospitalized, some in critical condition. The transport minister has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and acknowledged the ongoing efforts of rescue teams as the situation unfolds, with expectations of a rising death toll as the investigation continues.
