Residents in Regina are encountering coyotes not just at movie theaters but also in local parks. Scott Paton, a regular at Les Sherman Park, had a close encounter with a coyote in mid-August. Despite the animal’s proximity, Paton described it as more curious than aggressive. He continued his walk, cautioning others in the park, where a woman mentioned seeing the coyote around for weeks.
While Paton hasn’t seen the coyote since, he has noticed signs of its presence, like scat in the area. However, he remains unconcerned, stating that coyotes are part of the urban habitat and will naturally move on.
In the Cathedral neighborhood, some residents are less at ease with the presence of coyotes. Reports have flooded social media platforms since August, with numerous individuals sharing experiences of coyotes approaching them and their pets. One woman recounted being chased and circled by a coyote in Les Sherman Park.
Regina city Coun. David Froh also had a recent encounter with a coyote during a morning run in Les Sherman Park. Noting the animal’s comfort around people and pets, Froh emphasized the importance of addressing persistent wildlife sightings to ensure public safety.
Responding to reports of two coyotes in the area, the City of Regina stated it is collaborating with provincial conservation officers to safely remove and relocate the animals. Froh assured the community that the process would be conducted in a manner that prioritizes safety for both residents and the coyotes.
While acknowledging that coyote sightings can be disconcerting, Froh emphasized that such encounters are not uncommon in Regina. He urged residents to report sightings of coyotes or other wildlife that may pose safety risks to the city authorities.
Meanwhile, the film “Coyote vs. Acme,” featuring Will Forte, is currently showing in cinemas across Regina. Froh advised residents to report real-life coyote sightings to the City of Regina to address any potential safety concerns promptly.
