Penelope Milford, known for her acclaimed role in the 1978 movie “Coming Home,” has passed away at the age of 77 in Saugerties, New York. Her brother, Doug Milford, confirmed her death. The exact cause of her passing remains undisclosed.
In “Coming Home,” Penelope portrayed Vi Munson alongside Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, and Bruce Dern. She played the sister of Robert Carradine’s character, Bill Munson, whose Vietnam War experiences led to mental health struggles.
Although she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, Penelope lost to Maggie Smith for her performance in “California Suite.” Apart from her film career, she also excelled on stage, originating the character of Jenny Anderson in the musical “Shenandoah” in 1974.
Starting her acting journey in New York’s Off-Broadway scene, Penelope debuted in a production with Richard Gere in 1971 and moved on to Broadway in 1972 with the Tony Award-winning play “Lenny.” As the 1980s unfolded, she ventured into television, appearing in various TV productions.
In later years, Penelope shifted her focus to teaching film acting and preservation work before returning to New York in 2003. She maintained her involvement in local theater productions and the Bard Symphonic Chorus.
Penelope is survived by her brother Doug, while her other brother, Kim Milford, passed away in 1988 due to complications following open-heart surgery. Kim, also a Broadway actor, left a mark with his roles in iconic productions.
