Retailers have taken the measure of securing chocolate bars in plastic containers as they have become prime targets for theft.

Business owners have reported that popular chocolate brands are among the most frequently stolen items, indicating a trend where stolen goods are sold to finance broader criminal activities. Some small businesses are experiencing significant losses, with hundreds of pounds worth of chocolate disappearing weekly.

Reports from the BBC reveal that criminals are now targeting chocolate bars on demand.

Major supermarket chains like Sainsbury’s have taken precautions by using secure containers for products that are frequently stolen, such as Cadbury Dairy Milk bars priced at £2.60, which are now locked up in a London store. Other retailers like Tesco and Co-Op are also adopting this practice, requiring customers to seek assistance from staff to access the chocolate.
