Celebrated writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has accused a hospital of neglecting her one-year-old son, who passed away after a brief illness. Representatives of Adichie, 48, known for acclaimed works such as Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun, confirmed the tragic death of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi, last Wednesday. They stated that Adichie and her partner, Dr. Ivara Esege, are devastated by the loss.
Adichie pointed fingers at Euracare Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, where her son died on January 6. Alleging that her son would have survived if not for an incident at the hospital, Adichie explained that her son was improperly monitored after being administered propofol during medical procedures, leading to complications.
Following resuscitation, the child was placed on life support but sadly succumbed to seizures and cardiac arrest. Adichie questioned the hospital’s negligence in monitoring her son after the sedation, emphasizing the importance of proper care for sick children.
In response, Euracare Hospital denied allegations of negligence by its anesthetists, expressing condolences to Adichie and her family for their loss. The hospital defended its reputation as a facility for specialized medical care, led by a skilled clinical team.
While acknowledging the family’s grief, the hospital clarified that they followed established medical protocols and collaborated with external medical teams, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and compliance with clinical standards. They assured ongoing support to the grieving family and initiated an investigation into the matter.
