A professional jockey narrowly escaped a life-threatening incident when her pelvis was severely injured after the horse she was riding fell on her. Sonja Logan, a champion jockey, faced a brutal attack by a group of assailants in 2023 while attempting to steal her car. During the terrifying assault, she sustained multiple injuries, including a broken nose, lacerated lip, and three shattered front teeth just weeks before her wedding. The perpetrators fled the scene upon the alarm being raised, and they remain unidentified. Recounting the excruciating experience of being trapped beneath a half-ton racehorse, Logan described it as the most intense pain she had ever endured.
On the day of the incident, Logan was riding Jumping Power Two, a horse trained by her husband Tommy, who had been victorious in their previous four races together. The six-year-old gelding became agitated by a sudden disturbance, causing him to rear up and throw Logan off while the back gate of the horsebox opened. As Logan fell to the ground, the horse landed on top of her, resulting in a crushing impact on her pelvis. Despite the severity of her injuries, Logan was swiftly attended to by medical personnel who administered pain relief and fitted her with a pelvic brace before transferring her to Darwin Royal Hospital and later to Adelaide Royal Hospital for specialized treatment.
Reflecting on the incident, Logan explained the extensive surgical intervention required to stabilize her fractured pelvis, which involved the insertion of screws and a plate to facilitate her recovery. She acknowledged the fortunate outcome of the accident, emphasizing that the horse’s weight landing on her pelvis narrowly averted more catastrophic injuries. Currently undergoing rehabilitation at home with the aid of a walking frame, Logan anticipates a recovery period of six to eight months, contingent on the healing process and rehabilitation progress.
Following a previous traumatic event where Logan was a victim of a carjacking, she exhibited resilience by returning to horse riding and achieving notable success in competitions. However, behind her public triumphs, Logan struggled with personal challenges, including depression and alcohol abuse. To overcome these adversities, she turned to competitive bodybuilding, which helped her regain mental fortitude and alleviate anxiety. Supported by a strong network of individuals, including her devoted husband Tommy, Logan expressed gratitude for the unwavering assistance she received during her recovery journey.
In her reflection on the latest ordeal, Logan drew a distinction between the accidental injury caused by the horse and the deliberate violence she endured during the carjacking. Despite the pain and physical limitations, she remained appreciative of the compassionate care provided by her support system, particularly her husband’s unwavering dedication to her well-being.
