Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by opening up about her battle with an illness and the treatments she’s undergone. The Canadian music icon revealed in an exclusive Harper’s Bazaar feature that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving a formal diagnosis in 2022.

The debilitating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left her struggling to walk, requiring high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome, a rare progressive neurological autoimmune disorder affecting only a few individuals per million, manifests through rigid muscles and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While no specific treatment is officially approved for the condition, various therapies can help manage its symptoms.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor reasons like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering from her fans. The realization that something more serious was at play made her feel as though she was deceiving her supporters, whose unwavering backing enabled her to seek extensive treatments.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows. She has not performed publicly since the 2024 Paris Olympics but is determined to make a comeback in September. Dion’s recovery routine involves a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and attends ballet classes twice a week to prepare for her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly in motion and wary of remaining stationary for too long, Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as nothing short of a miracle that she cherishes deeply. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, she is eager to return to the stage for her Paris residency, scheduled to run from September 12 to May 29 next year.
