An individual from Edmonton who had been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Texas is now back in Canada, recounting the challenges he faced during his time in detention.

Curtis Wright, 40, a long-time resident of the United States, was held by ICE in Texas for nine months following a trip to Mexico in November. The reason for his detention traces back to a minor drug possession charge from when he was 17 years old.

Motivated to stay in the U.S. to be with his two young sons from a previous marriage, aged 8 and 11, who reside in Texas, Wright was eventually returned to Canada in mid-August. Currently, he is residing with his fiancée and their daughter at his parents’ home in Kelowna, British Columbia.

In an interview with “Edmonton AM,” Wright shared the ordeal he faced while trying to remain in the U.S. He described the process he went through upon his return to Texas from Mexico, which led to his detention by ICE.

Wright explained the interrogation he faced and being informed of his detention, with subsequent challenges in the legal process. Despite efforts to fight his case, including support from various officials and senators, Wright ultimately decided to be deported to Canada after a prolonged legal battle and difficult conditions in detention.

Reflecting on his experience during the nine months in detention, Wright highlighted the poor living conditions, including hygiene issues, inadequate food, and mistreatment by officers, aiming to coerce detainees into giving up their legal battles.

Having made the tough decision to return to Canada for the sake of his family, Wright plans to resume his career in the oil and gas industry, with his previous employer setting up a Canadian division for him to lead. Supported by his employer and family in Edmonton, Wright looks ahead to rebuilding his life in Canada.
