Impact on GDP: BMO Predictions
The newly imposed 50% tariffs affect approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian exports to the U.S. This amounts to about 5% of Canada’s total exports to the U.S., according to BMO senior economist Robert Kavcic. BMO’s analysis suggests that these tariffs could lower Canada’s GDP growth by half a percentage point due to businesses becoming cautious about making new investments.

According to a recent analysis by University of Calgary economics professor Trevor Tombe, Canada could face tens of thousands of job losses due to these tariffs. Sectors supporting industries affected by tariffs, such as trucking or bookkeeping services, are also expected to suffer job losses.
Tombe estimates that the total job losses could reach 87,000, including indirect impacts on various sectors across the Canadian economy.
