Jenny Agutter, known for her role as Sister Julienne in “Call The Midwife,” provided an update on her health as the new series prepares to return. Just before the 2020 Christmas special of the BBC drama, Agutter revealed that she was hit by shingles after feeling “perfectly fit.”

Although shingles typically lasts up to four weeks, Agutter continues to experience discomfort five years later. She described the sensation as an itchy, bruised feeling around one side of her face, specifically across her eyebrow and forehead.

Despite the lingering effects, the actress expressed gratitude for her overall well-being, mentioning her ability to enjoy activities like walking, eating, and maintaining proper bodily functions. She humorously acknowledged the natural aging processes, noting the occasional creaks and grunts when getting up from a low chair in the morning.

Reflecting on her shingles ordeal, Agutter described it as a painful and unpleasant experience. She attributed the outbreak to potential stress factors, suggesting that the lockdown period may have contributed to the onset of the condition.

Shingles typically manifests as a rash on one side of the body, commonly on the chest and abdomen but potentially appearing elsewhere such as the face, eyes, or genitals. If someone suspects they have shingles, seeking advice from a pharmacist or NHS 111 is recommended.

Celebrating her 73rd birthday in December, Agutter, who recently wrapped filming for the latest series of “Call The Midwife,” emphasized her love for staying active in her career. She finds joy in the collaborative nature of working on projects, appreciates the camaraderie on set, and values the behind-the-scenes aspects of production.

The latest series of “Call The Midwife” begins in 1971, featuring characters embracing Women’s Lib by burning their bras outside Nonnatus House. The premiere episode airs tonight at 8pm on BBC One.
