Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, surprised the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a 4-3 victory in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the home team in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized to make it 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton struck again just before the break to secure her brace, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also added a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The defeat ended Ottawa’s 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (with 9 shots on target compared to 6). The Wild earned six of the 11 corner kicks, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then secured a dramatic winner five minutes into second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 triumph over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the Tides ahead in the 19th minute with a goal. The Rise dominated possession with 56% and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6 shots on target to 4.
Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
