A British student named Mia O’Brien is facing the possibility of being imprisoned in Dubai until 2050 due to a drug-related incident involving a single line of cocaine. Mia, a 24-year-old law student from Merseyside, was sentenced to life in a Dubai jail after being found in possession of 50 grams of Class A drugs in the Middle East last October.
Reports indicate that Mia’s co-detainee, a British mother, is also facing a 25-year sentence for a similar offense, suggesting a potential release year of 2050. The woman, who shared a cell with Mia, revealed that Mia had admitted to consuming cocaine at a party but denied any involvement in drug dealing.
Concerns have been raised about the severity of the sentence, with the woman stating that Mia had merely used a single line of cocaine and was not a dealer. Allegations were made that Mia got entangled in the situation due to the actions of her friend and her friend’s partner, who allegedly had the drugs.
Describing the detention facilities as appalling, the woman highlighted the dismal conditions in which Mia was held before being transferred to Al Awir jail from Al Barsha detention center. Mia, who had aspirations of pursuing a legal career, now faces the harsh reality of a prolonged prison term that she believes has shattered her dreams.
Mia’s mother, Danielle McKenna, expressed regret over her daughter’s situation, emphasizing that Mia is not a habitual drug user and has no prior criminal record. She believes Mia made a regrettable mistake during her visit to Dubai and did not have any intention to traffic or retain the drugs.
The family’s distress over Mia’s predicament has been compounded by the constraints on communication while she serves her sentence. Mia’s mother conveyed Mia’s feelings of remorse for jeopardizing her future career prospects due to a lapse in judgment during her trip to visit friends in Dubai.
