The birthplace of the New Romantics movement, The Blitz nightclub in London’s Covent Garden, operated for only 18 months from 1979 to 1981 on Tuesday nights, becoming a revolutionary cultural hotspot. Noteworthy figures like members of Spandau Ballet and Boy George frequented the venue, where flamboyant fashion and art-rock music reigned.

Co-owned by Steve Strange and DJ Rusty Egan, The Blitz was renowned for its androgynous and eccentric style inspired by military uniforms and glam rock extravagance. A new exhibition, “Blitz: The Club That Shaped the 80s,” at the Design Museum in Kensington will pay homage to its influential legacy.

The club’s exclusive atmosphere, curated by Steve Strange, challenged patrons to dress as “walking pieces of art,” with even Mick Jagger once being turned away for wearing jeans. This exclusivity fueled the creativity of the Blitz Kids, who constantly pushed boundaries in fashion and self-expression.

The venue served as a breeding ground for emerging talents like Spandau Ballet, who debuted their synth-pop sound at The Blitz before achieving global success. Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet credits the club for fostering a sense of responsibility and innovation among its patrons, ultimately shaping the future of pop music in the 80s.

Reflecting on the club’s impact, Kemp acknowledges its role in propelling various artistic endeavors, from music to design, and influencing the cultural landscape of the era. The Blitz’s significance extended beyond music, with individuals like Boy George crediting the club for providing a safe space for self-exploration and experimentation with sexuality.

The club’s influence reverberated through the careers of many, including pivotal figures like David Bowie, who sought out the club’s uniquely styled attendees for his music videos. The Blitz Club’s legacy as a hub for creativity and self-expression continues to resonate in the realms of music, fashion, and art.
