Android users are facing a concerning new threat as security experts at Bitdefender warn of a surge in infections by the dangerous Brokewell malware. This malicious bug can spy on devices, steal messages, remotely control phones, and even extract security codes, granting cybercriminals extensive control once installed.
The method of attack involves luring Android users through social media ads promising free access to high-value financial services. Clicking on these ads prompts users to download an app, leading to the malware installation. Bitdefender reports that the ongoing malware campaign has deployed 75 malicious ads, potentially reaching thousands of users in the EU.
Bitdefender’s analysis revealed that the deceptive ads on platforms like Facebook entice users with a free TradingView Premium app for Android, but instead deliver the advanced Brokewell malware variant designed to steal cryptocurrencies.
To prevent further victims, Bitdefender has shared advice and four essential rules for safeguarding against Brokewell. Recommendations include avoiding sideloading apps, being cautious of ads on reputable platforms like Facebook, scrutinizing URLs for fake domains, and reviewing app permissions for suspicious requests.
