Barry Hearn has come to the defense of Ronnie O’Sullivan following his withdrawal from The Masters tournament and has urged other snooker players to rise to the occasion in his absence.

O’Sullivan, a renowned eight-time Masters champion, made the decision to pull out of the prestigious event just before it commenced due to health reasons. Despite withdrawing from several tournaments in the past year, his participation in the London event had been anticipated.

Hearn dismissed claims that O’Sullivan is solely driven by money and emphasized that it is now up to his fellow competitors to engage fans when the 50-year-old is not available.

Speaking on the BBC’s Framed podcast, Hearn stated, “I don’t believe Ronnie is solely motivated by financial gain, and I think it’s unfair to suggest otherwise. He plays on his own terms and holds himself to high standards. Ronnie is a unique talent, possibly unmatched in our lifetime. While someone may eventually surpass him, for now, he has earned the right to choose when and where he competes.”

Acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans when O’Sullivan is absent, Hearn stressed the importance of other players stepping up to fill the void left by the snooker legend.

Hearn added, “Fans and players alike need to realize the responsibility they have in the absence of Ronnie. The sport thrives with a player like him, and ideally, there would be multiple talents of his caliber in the game. We may witness such talents emerging, and their nationality is yet to be determined. However, Ronnie’s significant contributions to snooker cannot be overlooked. While we will miss him when he takes a break, our primary concern should be his well-being and happiness in all his endeavors.”
