Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting a concerning phenomenon of turning red and perishing following the unprecedented drought experienced last summer. This alarming trend has raised apprehensions regarding the future of these iconic provincial trees. Professor Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring this issue. He has been in contact with woodlot owners who have reported the distressing sight of the once vibrant evergreen trees, often used as Christmas trees, gradually transitioning to a red, desiccated state before succumbing to death.
According to Prof. Taylor, the current scenario aligns with his observations from previous hot and dry summers, indicating that the warm and arid conditions, such as the severe drought encountered last year, negatively impact the growth capacity of balsam firs. Taylor, who has extensively studied the effects of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests, notes similar instances of balsam fir die-offs following exceptionally hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.
The adverse impact of drought conditions prompts the trees to halt the photosynthesis process prematurely, impeding their growth. Taylor elucidates that this interruption in energy production inhibits essential metabolic processes and the generation of defense mechanisms within the trees, rendering them vulnerable. This diminished resilience, coupled with the trees’ shallow root system hindering water absorption during dry periods, exacerbates their susceptibility to stressors like pests and diseases, leading to increased mortality rates.
Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has observed the distressing effects on his balsam firs since June, noticing the gradual reddening of the trees from the lower branches upwards. The ongoing die-off continues to claim trees daily, with McKeil estimating a loss of approximately 100 trees thus far. Despite salvaging some deceased trees for lumber, McKeil has altered his harvesting practices to maximize the remaining value from the firs before further losses occur.
Expressing concern over the escalating impact of climate change, McKeil believes the fate of balsam firs, especially in southern New Brunswick, appears bleak, emphasizing the urgency for species adaptation or migration to survive changing environmental conditions. Taylor emphasizes the urgent need for climate action, underscoring the visible effects on the province’s iconic balsam fir trees as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to shift away from fossil fuels and unsustainable forestry practices. He asserts that without expedited mitigation efforts, such environmental repercussions will persist, necessitating immediate and decisive action to safeguard the region’s biodiversity and ecological balance.
