Joey Mawson has been identified as the individual accused of sexually assaulting a nurse who worked for Michael Schumacher at the Formula 1 legend’s residence. The alleged incidents occurred after a party at Schumacher’s home in Gland, Switzerland, where Mawson, a 29-year-old Australian racer, is accused of assaulting the unconscious woman on two occasions.
Mawson has refuted the allegations, asserting that he had a consensual relationship with the nurse and mentioned a previous encounter at a nightclub in Geneva.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Mawson was once seen as a rising star in Formula 1 before experiencing a decline in performance and opting to resume racing in Australia. He had a close friendship with Mick Schumacher, competed against future F1 stars like Lando Norris from McLaren, and George Russell from Mercedes.
An upcoming trial was planned, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the District of La Cote had prepared a detailed indictment for the case. However, Mawson, a double champion of the Australian S5000 series who is currently banned from racing due to a doping scandal, failed to appear in court as scheduled.
Despite Mawson’s absence, the trial was officially commenced but was postponed to a later date, as reported by The Sun. It is important to note that no members of the Schumacher family are implicated in this legal matter.
The indictment from the Public Prosecutor’s Office accuses Mawson of sexually assaulting the nurse while she was unconscious after consuming vodka cocktails. The nurse, who remains unnamed, was a live-in caregiver for Schumacher, who requires continuous care following a tragic skiing accident in 2013.
According to court documents, the alleged incident took place on November 23, 2019, when Mawson was at Schumacher’s residence, playing pool with other staff members. After the nurse retired to bed following her shift, Mawson purportedly returned and assaulted her while she was unconscious. The nurse reported the incident over two years later, in January 2022.
