Following a crew member’s serious medical condition, four astronauts are being evacuated from the International Space Station. Footage captured the Crew-11 members boarding the Dragon Endeavour spacecraft before sealing the hatch. NASA has made the rare decision to cut short the mission on the ISS due to the medical issue, prompting the early return of the US-Japanese-Russian crew members.

The cancellation of NASA’s first spacewalk of the year was necessitated by the health concern, although the astronaut’s identity and specific condition have not been disclosed for privacy reasons. Despite this, the crew member’s condition is reported as stable.

The returning crew, consisting of NASA’s Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japan’s Kimiya Yui, and Russia’s Oleg Platonov, arrived at the space station in August for a planned six-month stay. Their spacecraft is scheduled to touch down on Earth at 8.41 am UK time.

The ISS is equipped with limited medical supplies, including over 200 medications, an ultrasound machine, defibrillator, and intravenous therapy kit. This marks the first evacuation from the space station due to a health issue in 25 years, highlighting the rigorous medical checks astronauts undergo before space travel. Since the station’s inception in 2000, over 280 astronauts have visited.

Fincke and Cardman were set to conduct a spacewalk to prepare for upcoming solar panel installations to enhance the station’s power supply. While it was Fincke’s fourth visit and Yui’s second, Cardman and Platonov were on their first spaceflight. NASA administrator Jared Isaacman commended the agency’s prompt actions to ensure astronaut safety.

Presently, three astronauts, including NASA’s Chris Williams and Russia’s Sergei Mikaev and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, are residing on the space station. Launched in November, they are expected to return home after an eight-month stay in the summer.
