Amanda Barrie, known to many as Alma Baldwin from Coronation Street, also had a notable role in the popular female prison drama, Bad Girls. The show, which aired on ITV for eight series in the early 2000s, featured Amanda and Stephanie Beacham as the eccentric cellmates known as the “Costa Cons.” Amanda’s real-life toughness was exemplified when she once confronted a gangster while partially undressed, using only a chair for defense.

Recalling her time at Winston’s, a renowned West End cabaret club, Amanda shared a humorous anecdote about her showgirl days alongside Barbara Windsor. Despite the glamour of the entertainment industry, their dressing room was less than ideal, being used to store meat and accommodating multiple performers. A disturbing incident with a persistent man led Amanda to take decisive action, wielding a chair to fend off unwanted advances.

The encounter with the man turned out to be more serious than expected, as he was revealed to be a former enforcer for gangster Albert ‘Alby’ Dimes. In the 1950s, Soho was a hotspot for organized crime, with rival gangs like The Richardsons and The Krays exerting influence. Despite initially angering Dimes, Amanda was surprised to receive a gesture of goodwill from him the next day, leading to an unexpected alliance and protection in the club.

Amanda’s daring nature and quick thinking in the face of danger have been highlighted in her new autobiography, “Amanda Barrie: I’m Still Here.” The book, co-written with bestselling crime author Hilary Bonner, explores her eventful life and encounters with various personalities, showcasing her resilience and humor. As she continues to share her captivating stories, Amanda’s upcoming appearances on the “An Audience With Coronation Street” tour promise to engage and entertain audiences with her unique experiences and perspectives.
