Aldi has been recognized as the most budget-friendly supermarket in 2025 by Which? consumer advocates. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and highlights the most economical stores monthly. Aldi claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket for ten out of 12 months in 2025, solidifying its position as the UK’s most cost-effective supermarket for the fifth consecutive year.

In December, Aldi emerged as the most economical supermarket for a selection of 68 items, with an average monthly cost of £123.60. Lidl followed closely, with a mere 10p difference in December, averaging £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members.

Lidl took the lead as the most economical supermarket twice in the previous year, in July and October, with just a 77p average monthly price variance compared to Aldi throughout the year.

For the same set of 68 items at Asda, the average cost was £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard members paid £135.84 or £139.12 without a Clubcard.

Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders spent £141.45, or £143.74 without a Nectar card, while Waitrose was the priciest supermarket for the list of 68 items, totaling £170.46 in December. Which? research unveiled that Waitrose cost 35% more on average than Aldi in 2025.

Aldi and Lidl were excluded from the comparison for a larger list of 180 items due to their smaller product range. Asda emerged as the most affordable in December for the expanded list, with an average bill of £450.82.

Tesco Clubcard holders paid an average of £462 in December for the same items, while Tesco shoppers without a Clubcard paid £493.53. Morrisons’ bill was £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders paid £468.61, and non-members paid £501.89.

Waitrose maintained its position as the most expensive supermarket for the larger shopping list, with an average bill of £529.17. The Which? analysis considered special offers and loyalty prices where relevant but excluded multi-buy deals.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi’s consistent performance demonstrates why it has clinched the title of the UK’s most economical supermarket for the fifth consecutive year. While Lidl provides robust competition among discounters and remains a great option for savvy shoppers, Aldi consistently offered the best prices overall.”

“Our analysis highlights Asda as a strong choice for consumers seeking a wider range of branded goods at competitive prices. With food costs remaining a significant concern for many households, it pays off to compare options as choosing one supermarket over another could lead to substantial savings over a year.”
