In the realm of skincare advice circulating on social media platforms, the abundance of conflicting opinions can leave individuals unsure about the best practices to follow. Amid the surge of viral products promising solutions for various skincare issues, a prominent dermatologist has cautioned against the potential harm caused by misguided online recommendations.

Consultant Dermatologist Dr. Emma Amoafo-Mensah has offered valuable insights on navigating the overwhelming landscape of social media beauty trends to safeguard skin health. In response to reports indicating that 69% of Gen Z individuals feel inundated by the multitude of beauty products available, with many incorporating anti-aging solutions meant for more mature skin, she advocates for a “skincare reset.”

Dr. Emma highlights the pitfalls of succumbing to trends and hacks, emphasizing the potential risks associated with unnecessary product experimentation. She underlines the pressure on young consumers to invest in unsuitable items that could compromise skin well-being.

Her advice includes a call for those under 25 to steer clear of anti-aging products, citing that the signs of aging typically have not manifested yet in youthful skin. Cautioning against the use of harsh ingredients like alcohols and active chemicals, which may lead to skin barrier damage, she warns against excessive exfoliation and complex skincare routines that can exacerbate skin issues.

Instead, Dr. Emma recommends a simple three-step regimen comprising a gentle cleanser, toner, and water-based cream tailored to the sensitivity of young skin. She advocates for the inclusion of restorative ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid to fortify the skin barrier and maintain its health.

For effective skincare maintenance, she suggests products such as The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% serum or Beauty Of Joseon Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide, both designed to address specific skin concerns while promoting hydration and balance. Additionally, the Simple Booster Serum 10% Niacinamide from Boots offers a versatile solution suitable for various skin types, enriched with vitamin B3 for enhanced nourishment.

Lastly, Dr. Emma emphasizes the importance of incorporating a high SPF sunscreen as the final step in a skincare routine to shield against harmful UVA and UVB rays, essential for preventing premature aging and skin damage throughout the year, even on overcast days.
