Britons typically spend around 27 years of their lives in bed, with an additional 7 years dedicated to falling asleep. Despite the bedroom being a cozy sanctuary, experts warn that it can harbor some of the dirtiest spots in the home.

Senior sleep expert Martin Seeley from MattressNextDay has highlighted the top five hygiene concerns in bedrooms and provided tips on how to address them. While most people are diligent about washing bath towels, mattresses are often overlooked, even though studies show they can be home to up to 10,000 dust mites.

These microscopic creatures thrive on dead skin in warm, humid environments and can exacerbate allergies due to their droppings. Dust mite waste enzymes are known to trigger allergic reactions, particularly in individuals with asthma or respiratory issues.

To combat this, experts advise deep cleaning mattresses every three months, especially during rotation. Surprisingly, a significant portion of the population neglects cleaning common bedroom items like light switches, lamps, fan switches, and headboards, which can accumulate bacteria and mold.

Regular cleaning of these often-forgotten areas is crucial for maintaining a healthy sleep environment. Blankets and throws, frequently overlooked during cleaning routines, can also harbor allergens and oils, impacting sleep quality. Washing these items weekly along with bedding can improve the overall cleanliness of the sleeping space.

Lastly, hot water bottles, a popular choice for staying warm, often go unwashed, leading to bacterial buildup on their covers. Martin recommends washing these covers regularly with mild detergent to ensure a cozy and hygienic bedtime experience.
