Nine police officers stationed at a precinct where previous incidents of inappropriate behavior were reported have been suspended due to allegations of discriminatory and offensive conduct. The officers, ranging from constables to sergeants, are accused of engaging in racist, homophobic, and misogynistic behavior, as well as using excessive force on detainees. The allegations stem from an undercover investigation conducted by the BBC at the custody suite of Charing Cross police station in central London.
The incidents are said to have taken place both on and off duty between August 2024 and January 2025, according to the police watchdog. The misconduct at Charing Cross police station comes after a series of scandals that prompted former commissioner Dame Cressida Dick to step down in February 2022. A previous report by the Independent Office for Police Conduct highlighted offensive exchanges among officers, including jokes about rape, domestic violence, racism, homophobia, and derogatory remarks towards disabled individuals.
Following a mandatory referral from the Metropolitan Police, the IOPC has initiated an investigation involving nine current officers, one former officer, and a designated detention officer. Additionally, another force referred a former Met officer’s conduct at Charing Cross. The IOPC director, Amanda Rowe, expressed concern over the allegations and assured the public of a thorough and independent inquiry.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist condemned the reported behavior as disgraceful and confirmed the immediate suspension of nine officers, with two others removed from frontline duties. Steps are being taken to overhaul the custody team at Charing Cross police station to uphold high standards and address leadership and cultural issues. The Met is committed to regaining public trust and eliminating individuals who do not align with the organization’s values.
The Police Federation England & Wales voiced deep concern over the allegations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in law enforcement. The IOPC’s 2022 report revealed further instances of misconduct, including abusive language and offensive remarks made by officers. The investigation will delve into these matters to ensure accountability and transparency within the police force.
