The United Kingdom is bracing for a substantial rainstorm in the upcoming days, as weather maps pinpoint the exact timing and locations of the downpour. Forecasting site WXCharts has revealed a vast band of rain spanning 630 miles from Scotland’s Hebrides to southeast England, expected to sweep across the country on Sunday, September 14.
In England, heavy rainfall is predicted to commence around 9 am on Sunday, affecting major cities like Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Southampton, Plymouth, and London. Manchester may experience rainfall rates of up to 5mm per hour, while Newcastle could see around 2.5mm per hour.
Wales, particularly Cardiff, is also expected to face significant rainfall rates of up to 1mm per hour. Meanwhile, Edinburgh in Scotland is likely to encounter the heaviest rain with rates reaching up to 5mm per hour.
Parts of the Highlands in Scotland may initially escape the worst of the downpour; however, the wet weather is forecasted to move northwest by midday. In Northern Ireland, Belfast is anticipated to witness the heaviest showers with around 1mm per hour of rainfall.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning due to severe winds of up to 80mph expected in various regions of England and Wales from 8 pm on Sunday to 6 pm on Monday. The warning advises precautionary measures to safeguard against potential injuries and property damage from flying debris.
Residents in the affected areas should prepare for possible building damage, coastal town disruptions due to large waves, as well as travel disruptions including road and bridge closures. Power outages are also a concern, potentially impacting services like mobile phone coverage.
The Met Office recommends staying indoors as much as possible during the storm and avoiding proximity to buildings and trees if venturing outside. Additionally, unnecessary travel should be avoided to ensure safety.
Chief Meteorologist Paul Gundersen at the Met Office highlighted the monitoring of a deepening low-pressure area over the North Atlantic that could bring impactful weather to the UK over the weekend, although the likelihood of a named storm is currently low.
