A recent national survey indicates strong public backing for the fundamental principles of the NHS, despite Reform UK’s proposal to switch to an insurance-based healthcare model. According to the annual Health Foundation poll, 85% of respondents believe the NHS should continue to offer comprehensive services to everyone, with 83% supporting its funding through general taxation. The survey, conducted by Ipsos, involved 2,286 participants, including 1,804 from England.

Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has advocated for a healthcare system where individuals pay based on their financial capability. The party, currently leading over Labour in polls, faces increased scrutiny regarding its healthcare policies if it secures victory in the upcoming general election.

Farage expressed confidence in becoming the next Prime Minister, criticizing the NHS funding system and praising the French healthcare model for its efficiency. The French system incorporates mandatory state-run social insurance funded through deductions and taxes, with patients often required to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later. Private insurance is also common to cover additional costs.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized Labour’s commitment to a free-at-point-of-service NHS, contrasting Reform’s approach. Labour’s investments have reportedly led to enhanced services, reduced waiting times, and increased healthcare staffing. The majority of NHS funding in England is sourced from general taxation, with a small portion from patient charges like prescriptions and dental treatments.

Looking ahead five years, the Health Foundation survey revealed public concerns about the NHS’s future adherence to core principles. Reform UK has affirmed its dedication to maintaining free healthcare access, aligning with its 2024 manifesto. Public satisfaction with the NHS under Labour has shown improvement, with recent polling reflecting a positive shift in perceptions compared to previous years.

Despite ongoing challenges, researchers noted a gradual uptick in public sentiment toward the healthcare sector. Tim Gardner from the Health Foundation highlighted the importance of government initiatives in building public trust and achieving meaningful improvements in healthcare services.
