A significant sinkhole has emerged near a primary school, leading to the closure of the road and the installation of a protective barrier.

Photos depicting the sinkhole on Bryn Llidiard in Bridgend, outside Litchard Primary School, have raised concerns. Despite the sinkhole, the school remains operational. Emergency responders have been on-site to investigate the cause of the sinkhole. The affected road segment, spanning from Litchard Hill to Cross Street, has been sealed off to traffic, prompting parents to escort their children to and from school. Bridgend council has promised to provide updates once more information is gathered.

A council spokesperson announced, “A temporary road closure has been implemented on Bryn Llidiard outside Litchard Primary School due to a sinkhole. Investigations into the sinkhole’s origin are ongoing.”

“While vehicular access to the school from Bryn Llidiard is restricted, the school continues to operate normally. Parents and guardians have been notified and are advised to accompany their children on foot,” the spokesperson added.

Litchard Primary School released a statement advising parents and guardians to escort students to and from school whenever feasible.

Local resident Alexa Ali observed the sinkhole forming on Monday afternoon, triggered by a passing car. She remarked to the BBC, “The situation is exacerbating due to the school and the congestion in this area; hopefully, a resolution will be reached promptly.” Another local resident, Tracy, mentioned, “Parents are being encouraged to walk their children to alleviate traffic congestion,” as reported by WalesOnline.

Social media users have also commented on the incident, with one individual on Facebook describing the sinkhole as small on the surface but with significant depth and erosion underneath the road/path. Another mentioned the poor road conditions near the school.

In a separate incident last month, motorists encountered traffic disruptions when an entire road was shut down for over a week due to a sinkhole reportedly the size of a 10p coin. The affected street in Cowes on the Isle of Wight, measuring 79 meters in length, was closed off for safety reasons. Local complaints surfaced regarding the maintenance authority’s handling of the situation.
