As temperatures start to drop, a specialist has raised concerns about a surge in these pungent insects. Cockroaches are notorious for their unsettling appearance and resilient nature, as well as their unpleasant oily odor. A pest control expert has alerted homeowners to heightened activity from these unsettling bugs as autumn sets in and heating systems are turned on nationwide.

James Copley, the owner of Copley Pest Solutions, highlighted that cockroaches thrive in warm, humid conditions that arise when heating systems are activated after being inactive for months. According to James, the combination of rising indoor temperatures and falling outdoor temperatures provides the perfect environment for dormant insect populations to become active and reproduce.

He explained that cockroaches, which typically hide in dark, undisturbed areas during the summer, suddenly encounter optimal breeding conditions when homes heat up. As these pests emerge from cracks and crevices in search of food and water, they become more visible, causing concern for homeowners. Apart from their unattractive appearance, cockroaches carry various bacteria that can contaminate food and surfaces, posing potential health risks.

James emphasized that prevention is more effective than dealing with established infestations. Advising clients to check for gaps around pipes, seal cracks in walls and floors, and store food in airtight containers, he stressed the importance of good hygiene practices alongside heating system maintenance to deter infestations. Kitchens are particularly susceptible to infestation, as cockroaches are drawn to warmth, food, and water. Regular vacuuming, cleaning of surfaces, and prompt repair of leaking pipes are recommended to prevent infestations.

In case of cockroach activity in the home, swift action is advised as female cockroaches reproduce rapidly, escalating minor issues into major infestations quickly. To further safeguard homes from cockroaches, James suggests scheduling a professional inspection before the heating season commences to identify and address any potential problems before they escalate into full-blown infestations.
