A surfer tragically lost his life after being attacked by a shark while trying to warn his friends about the danger at Dee Why Beach in Sydney. The victim, Mercury Psillakis, 57, sustained severe injuries, including the loss of multiple limbs, during the incident. Despite efforts by fellow surfers to rescue him, he succumbed to his injuries.

Police Inspector Stuart Thomson described the injuries as “catastrophic” and confirmed that Mr. Psillakis’ body was found in the water after the attack. His friends had safely returned to the beach before the discovery. Toby Martin, a close friend of the victim, recounted the harrowing event, mentioning that the shark approached unexpectedly from behind, delivering a swift and fatal attack.

Authorities have closed the beach and are collaborating with experts to identify the shark species involved in the incident. The rapid and precise nature of the attack suggests it may have been a great white shark, although the specific species has not been confirmed. As a precaution, beaches in the vicinity have been closed pending further assessments and advice.
