Eilish McColgan is eager to mirror her mother’s success by claiming victory in the upcoming Great North Run on Sunday. The Scottish athlete has narrowly missed out on winning the event twice before, competing against a field of 60,000 other participants.
Despite a close finish in 2021, McColgan is determined to secure first place this time around as she tackles the challenging half marathon course from Newcastle to South Shields.
Expressing her anticipation for the race, McColgan highlighted the significance of the event, mentioning her mother’s previous triumph and the illustrious winners who have graced the race in the past.
Having previously secured Commonwealth 10,000m gold, McColgan has faced setbacks due to injuries in recent years. However, she made a successful marathon debut in London in April, breaking her mother’s Scottish record in the process.
Looking to make up for lost time, McColgan views the Great North Run as valuable preparation for her upcoming marathon in New York scheduled for November.
Acknowledging the challenges she has faced, McColgan emphasized the importance of completing a marathon to boost her confidence and mental strength, setting her sights on future achievements.
In the elite men’s race, Marc Scott leads the British contingent and aims to replicate his 2021 success, competing against tough competitors such as defending champion Abel Kipchumba, Alex Mutiso Munyao, and Bashir Abdi.
