A young man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Thomas Gomm, his mother’s ex-boyfriend, during a birthday party. The tragic incident occurred when Jack Naylor, 22, was invited by his mother Lyndsey Davidson to celebrate his birthday at their home in Irlam, as detailed in the trial at Minshull Street Crown Court.
Thomas Gomm, aged 44, who suffered from alcoholism and health issues, was involved in an altercation with Naylor, described as physically stronger, resulting in severe head injuries. The events unfolded after a seemingly relaxed gathering where alcohol was consumed, with tensions escalating as Naylor engaged in rough play with his mother, prompting Gomm to intervene.
Naylor’s behavior turned aggressive, leading to his mother seeking refuge at a friend’s house while Naylor demanded money for alcohol and cigarettes with bloodied hands. Police intervened, arresting Naylor, who was later found guilty of murder and racially aggravated harassment towards an officer. Despite emergency medical efforts, Gomm succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
The post-mortem report revealed extensive head and neck injuries, along with defensive wounds, indicating a violent assault. Naylor was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for his crimes. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized Naylor’s lack of accountability for the brutal attack and expressed hope for closure for Gomm’s family as justice was served.
