Authorities have confirmed the passing of a third participant at the Burning Man festival, following the recent announcement of two other fatalities during the annual gathering in the Nevada desert. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office disclosed that Armando Ramirez from Truckee, Calif., passed away while in transit to a hospital in Reno, Nev., located approximately 190 kilometers south of the festival. The 51-year-old was declared deceased in the ambulance during the early hours of Friday. The examiner’s office indicated that the cause and manner of death are pending further testing and assured that foul play is not suspected.
The festival, known for its art installations and celebration of self-expression, reported two additional deaths last week, which were confirmed by the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday. Craigh Mann, aged 60, was discovered deceased on Saturday around 3 p.m. local time in a trailer he shared with his partner, according to festival officials. Another participant, identified as Sampson Tshombe, in his mid-50s, suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead after receiving urgent medical attention at the festival’s temporary hospital on Thursday, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
Although no foul play is suspected in the deaths of Mann and Tshombe, authorities have scheduled autopsies and toxicology screenings, with results expected in six to eight weeks. This year marks the festival’s 40th anniversary, commencing on Aug. 30 and concluding on Monday. Each year, tens of thousands of individuals gather in the desert for camping and avant-garde performances, culminating in the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy resembling a man.
While tragic incidents have occurred in past editions of the festival, with over half a dozen reported deaths since its relocation from Baker Beach in San Francisco to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, the Pershing County sheriff and coroner, Jerry Allen, noted that the festival typically experiences one fatality annually, as reported by NBC News.
