John Albert (Buck) Martinez, a cancer survivor who has served as a catcher, manager, and broadcaster for the Toronto Blue Jays over nearly five decades, was recently inducted into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence. The Blue Jays introduced this section as part of their 50th-anniversary celebrations to pay tribute to the franchise’s most influential figures. The Hall, situated behind right field at Rogers Centre, enshrined 11 honorees previously recognized in the Level of Excellence.

Martinez, aged 77, received this honor before the Blue Jays’ game against the Seattle Mariners, where he expressed his astonishment at the recognition. He highlighted his profound connection with Canadian fans, a relationship that blossomed during his extensive tenure as a team broadcaster, a role he retired from in the prior winter.

Notably, Martinez shared a heartwarming encounter with a new fan, Brett Bateman, who approached him at the stadium to offer congratulations, emphasizing Martinez’s significance to the Blue Jays community. Martinez recounted a memorable incident in England where strangers recognized his voice and expressed their admiration for the team, showcasing the profound impact the Blue Jays have had nationwide.

Joining an esteemed group of individuals in the Hall of Excellence, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, and Roy Halladay, Martinez’s legacy as a player, manager, and broadcaster has left an indelible mark on the Blue Jays organization and its fans. The Level of Excellence, which currently adorns the ballpark’s fascia, will be relocated within the stadium next year to ensure continued visibility for fans.

Traveling from Florida to Toronto for the induction ceremony, Martinez was accompanied by fellow Blue Jays luminaries such as Cito Gaston and Jose Bautista. Colleagues like Tom Cheek, Carlos Delgado, and Joe Carter were present to celebrate Martinez’s achievements.

Recognized for his exceptional contributions to baseball in Canada, Martinez, who battled head and neck cancer in 2022 and lung cancer in 2025, concluded his playing career in 1986 after representing multiple MLB teams. His broadcasting journey began in 1982, overlapping with his playing days, and culminated in over 4,000 games called for the Blue Jays, showcasing his enduring commitment to the team and the sport.

Acknowledged with the Jack Graney Award by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023, Martinez’s career spans various media platforms, including ESPN, TSN, and MLB International, solidifying his status as a respected figure in baseball broadcasting.

The establishment of the Hall of Excellence sets the stage for honoring past and present contributors to the Blue Jays’ legacy, fostering a deeper connection between fans and the individuals who have shaped the team over the years.
