In Las Vegas, what unfolds typically remains within the city’s boundaries, but an incident involving excessive alcohol consumption and the theft of a flamingo has garnered international attention.

An Ontario man, Mitchell Fairbarn, faced animal cruelty charges for snatching a flamingo named Peachy from a Las Vegas hotel’s habitat in a drunken and malicious act. Despite pleading not guilty, Fairbarn was convicted on felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty counts. His sentencing is scheduled for December 1, with a potential prison term of up to four years for the felony and six months for the misdemeanor.

Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, admitted to consuming “30 to 40” beers before taking the flamingo in what he initially considered a humorous act. The incident occurred at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where Fairbarn thought it would be a prank to share with his friends.

Video evidence showed Fairbarn carrying the flamingo through the hotel, resulting in the bird’s injury with missing feathers, broken shafts, and signs of trauma. Peachy, a 27-year-old flamingo, required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication, to recover.

While Fairbarn’s defense emphasized his intoxicated state and lack of intent to harm the bird, prosecutors argued that his actions caused the flamingo physical distress. The trial’s outcome saw Fairbarn expressing regret for his actions and being under house arrest since the incident.

Despite the distressing incident, Peachy has recuperated and is reported to be in good health, as confirmed by Caesars Entertainment. Animal rights advocate John Waudby hailed the verdict as a message against animal mistreatment in Nevada, where similar cases of cruelty at Las Vegas casinos have recently surfaced.
