Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with offenses including trafficking minors, money laundering, sexual activities with a minor, and witness tampering. His brother Tristan has been accused of complicity in the crimes. The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship and were previously kickboxers, were arrested in Miami in late July following a request for extradition from Britain.
Having primarily resided in Romania since 2017, the brothers have been the subject of a criminal investigation since December 2022, facing allegations such as human trafficking. Despite the accusations, they have maintained their innocence. Romanian prosecutors allege that the Tates enticed victims by falsely promising relationships or marriage before coercing them into producing pornographic content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the indictment, the Tates’ Romanian lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, declared that they would thoroughly scrutinize all aspects and challenge any deficiencies through the legal process. The brothers continue to deny the allegations leveled against them. Currently detained in the U.S., a decision on their extradition to Britain, where they face rape charges, is pending.
The Romanian anti-organized crime unit DIICOT, investigating the Tates, has not confirmed whether they will seek extradition from the United States. While the brothers could face trial in absentia in Romania, proceedings will not commence immediately. According to Romanian law, the indictment will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber to ensure legal compliance, a process that typically extends beyond the mandated 60-day period.
Notably, Andrew Tate reportedly engaged in sexual exploitation of a 15-year-old victim in the U.K. before relocating her to Bucharest, Romania, where she was coerced into producing explicit content through physical violence and mental coercion. His brother Tristan allegedly played a role in the victim’s exploitation through physical aggression. Prosecutors claim that the brothers retained a significant portion of the victim’s earnings from videochat services, attempting to launder the proceeds by purchasing luxury vehicles.
While previously facing human trafficking charges in Romania, the brothers had the case remanded to prosecutors in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence. Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views on women, admitted to moving to Romania due to perceived leniency in law enforcement. The brothers cultivated their following, predominantly young males, by projecting a flamboyant, hyper-masculine image centered on fast cars and attractive companions.
